Position Requirements:

Send us your resume outlining your prior experience with animals in a paid or volunteer capacity, and all other work experience in all industries.  Preference given to candidates who have worked with animals (veterinary technicians, vet assistants, shelter employees, adoption or foster managers, volunteers, animal control, daycare, boarding facility, breeding or training facility, and other animal specialists). 

Experience and Education: 

  • Has experience handling and working with a variety of pets other than your own
  • Administers all medications: pilling dogs and cats, injecting insulin, measuring and administering liquid suspensions, and giving subcutaneous fluids
  • Has a background of handling emergency situations
  • Proficient in animal first aid; pet first aid certification preferred
  • Has 4-year college degree, or commensurate experience

Physical Requirements

  • Capable of working outdoors in all types of weather
  • Capable of controlling two strong dogs simultaneously on leash
  • Capable of walking several miles a day
  • Has no allergies to animals, dander, fur, or saliva
  • Performs, without restriction, all moderately strenuous physical tasks including walking several miles, bending, stooping, ascending and descending stairs, restraining animals, lifting up to 40 lbs

  • Lives in or near zip codes we serve (zip 22301, 22302, 22303, 22304, 22305, 22306, 22307, 22308, 22309, 22311, 22312, 22314)
  • Has some availability 7 days a week. Weekdays, nights, weekends and holiday hours required
  • Adapts to a pet sitter’s lifestyle, working in “chunks” of time 1-3 hours morning, 1-4 hours afternoon, 1-2 hours evenings
  • Wants the best for all animals, and is focused on their individuality, routines, comfort and happiness
  • Manages a daily schedule of appointments without supervision
  • Works well independently in a client team environment where virtual teamwork and constant communication are essential
  • Is a perfectionist, trustworthy, punctual, and works ethically when no one is watching
  • Uses proficiently multiple technology apps, websites and smartphone
  • Works accurately from multiple sources of written instructions
  • Retains verbal instructions and written details
  • Has the maturity to care for client homes, to handle pet emergencies, to think proactively, to ask questions, and to seek clarification
  • Is an excellent written and oral communicator who’s fluent in English
  • Works as a cheerful, service-oriented, enthusiastic team player
  • Passes a complete background check
  • Has reliable car or truck (all-wheel drive preferable for inclement weather), an excellent driving record, a valid driver’s license and current auto insurance


  • Visit household pets of all types in their own homes: dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, etc.
  • Hours: 10-40 hours/week, as needed
  • Schedule: Varies day to day. 2-5 hours daily as needed between 7am – 10pm, 7 days a week
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are all required
  • Weekends and holidays are paid at time-and-a-half
  • No overnights, housesitting, or taking in pets at your home

What Happens Next:

We contact qualified applicants to schedule a phone interview, and candidates who pass the phone interview are invited to an in-person meeting and face-to-face interview with a manager.

Following interviews, selected candidates pass a national background check, ID verification, criminal history check, and reference check before being hired.

New hires begin work with a reduced schedule for paid training time in the first several weeks to ensure a successful transition, during which time they will meet with pet owners, meet with pet professionals already on staff, ride along on select client appointments with an experienced employee, and build up to working a solo schedule of appointments in 60-90 days.
