During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been 3 million new U.S. pets purchased or adopted. Many of these pets have been impacted by their lack of contact during periods of isolation. Particularly puppies that missed the developmental window between 6-20 weeks to learn how to interact with humans. For our pre-pandemic furry family members, the sudden change in routine has caused stress and anxiety.
We have witnessed a 50% increase in pets that struggle with emotional regulation. Most pets are more sensitive to external factors, including us!
Trends we’ve seen through 2021-2022
- Dogs have increased anxiety and reactivity to normal everyday life (cars passing by, other people/dogs, rustling of trees, other wildlife, etc)
- Cats have increased anxiety towards unfamiliar humans
- All pets have an increased intolerance for being left home alone after having their family home 7 days a week
- Increased surrender rate of pets that were adopted during the pandemic
What we’re doing to meet their needs
- Our team is now Fear Free Certified and we’re well versed in personalized ways to improve pets’ emotional wellbeing during our visits.
- We have extended our free consultation to include a comfort visit for all new dog clients, practice dog walking visits as needed and a practice visit for any cats that require being handled for medication administration.
- We will assess and recommend any changes that can be made to reduce your pets anxiety during our visits. This can include higher reward treats upon our arrival, an extra baby gate so we can greet them slower, a distraction toy, etc.
What you can do to help your pets
- Establish a regular routine, even if you are working from home, some semblance of a routine will help ease your pets anxiety.
- Consider crate training to give your dog a safe and secure spot to retreat to.
- Don’t force your dog into social situations or environments they aren’t equipped to handle, this can make the situation worse.
- Try to leave the house even for short periods of time, leaving your pet at home.
- Work with a professional trainer as needed.
